Flames Demolish Delaware State
March 8, 2010Sunday, March 7, 2010, the Liberty Flames threw the first pitch at 1 p.m., leading to their ninth consecutive win this season. Liberty pulled in their third victory against the Delaware State Hornets with a sweeping 10-1. The third home game this weekend — also part of the Spring Family Fling at Liberty — continued the winning streak of Liberty’s best season for baseball since 1995.
Liberty started out strong by pushing through four runs in the first inning. Delaware scored one run in the top of the fifth, with LU responding quickly in the seventh inning with five more runs. Liberty Flames’ catcher Nathan Thompson scored half of LU’s victory by placing five of the ten total runs on the board. The victory caused Delaware State to fall to 3-6 thus far this season.
Sunday’s pleasant weather made the game an attractive pastime for Liberty students and the Lynchburg community alike, drawing all ages of spectators. The game was played at Worthington Stadium and was well attended by the post-church public. Liberty junior Adrienne Stewart enjoyed the game, saying, “It was the perfect day for a game ... they played well, as usual! There was lots of action, which made for a fun and interesting game.”
Liberty’s next opponent will be Old Dominion once again played on Liberty’s home turf of Worthington Stadium. The first pitch will be at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9. Following the game against Old Dominion, Liberty will play three games against St. John’s at Worthington Stadium over Spring Break weekend, March 12-14, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m., respectively.
