Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge

March 2, 2010

Liberty hosted their second annual Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge Festival this past Saturday at TRBC's Camp Hydaway. Held to raise money for the Special Olympics, and Liberty is currently the only college in Virginia that holds this event.

The festivities started around 11 a.m. when the Battle of the Bands began, but the actual plunge didn’t happen until around 1:30 p.m. The bands were great, but all everyone really wanted to see was a bunch of people jump into freezing cold water (which was supposedly around 38 degrees). Lunch was provided before the event by sponsors TGI Fridays and Cici's Pizza.

Some participated individually, while others formed teams. Everyone who jumped in seemed to be happy that they did it, but they definitely looked really cold. I didn't take the plunge this time, but I can say from a past experience from doing so that it feels more like thousands of needles than cold water. Although the experience is painful and uncomfortable, the participants have fun with it, and it also shows that they are willing to step out of their comfort zone to help people in need. Those freezing cold brave souls each had to raise at least $100 to take the plunge, so Liberty was thankfully able to raise a lot of money for the Special Olympics. It is a really great fundraiser to be involved in and was also a blast to watch.
