LU Equestrian Season Begins
February 23, 2010After one and half semesters of practice and preparation, the Liberty University equestrian team is ready to ride. Despite inclement weather that caused both rescheduling and cancellations, Liberty participated in their first horse show of the season, which was hosted by Sweet Briar College on Friday, February 21. The LU team has been practicing for the past semester in anticipation of the spring show season. The Sweet Briar show is the first of three regional IHSA horse shows in which Liberty will be competing.
The LU team competes in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) against colleges within the region. Present at the Friday show were such schools as Lynchburg College, Hollins University, Sweet Briar College, Roanoke College, Washington and Lee, UVA, Virginia Tech and Bridgewater College. Liberty University’s team is the most recent addition to the IHSA regional school roster.
The Sweet Briar show was a standard IHSA competition with both hunter jumper and hunter flat classes, with a variety of skill levels. Competing in the Novice on the Flat class were LU team members Candice Henderson and Phylicia Duran. Lydia Magyar placed fifth in the Beginner Walk, Trot, Canter class, and Jayme Ingram placed sixth in Beginner Walk Trot.
The Liberty team will next show on February 27th at Hollins University and February 28th at University of Virginia. The Liberty team will be practicing regularly this week for these final two shows. The Sweet Briar show was the first for the Liberty equestrian team, as well as the first horse show for some of the team members. Equestrian team member Cherrel Cook said, “I think that the first show went well and we have potential to do really well in our future shows in the coming year.”
