Good, Clean Headbanging and Heavy Metal

February 23, 2010

Thursday night in the Tilley Student Center, students gathered to enjoy some good, clean headbanging and heavy metal. Student Activities sponsored the concert which was part of the Student Artist Series. Three acts were performed in this free concert: Dean Robert, Forerunner and Our City Sleeps.

Dean Robert went solo as he opened up the night with soulful acoustic songs. His melodies rang out with a powerful voice and complex acoustic rhythms as he shared songs about finding love and God. He also performed some covers including “Down” by Jay Sean.

The next act of the night was performed by Forerunner, an extremely heavy metal band. At the beginning of their performance, the lead singer, Hunter Floyd, made sure the crowd understood their mission, which is to give glory to God. Hunter says he feels very strongly about making sure their listeners understand them: “Music is from passion and emotion. I think as a Christian [I should] play music in all kinds of genres to reach out to people.” The band truly involved the crowd in their show by encouraging them to move around and be a part of their music.

Our City Sleeps was the final performance. This band was characterized by their emotional melody between screaming choruses. As the band played their music, the lead singer explained that the theme of their songs is from the book of Isaiah. “This band, I would have to say, sounds like The Killers meets Thirty Seconds to Mars,” said Liberty Student Chris Swanson.

Overall, the night was a success for both the artists and the listeners. The bands had a chance to share their music and the students had the opportunity to enjoy a free concert.
