Dr. Falwell's Vision Fulfilled
February 23, 2010On Wednesday, February 10, 2010 Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. made a very important announcement to LU’s student body. The announcement was one of great excitement as he told the audience that Liberty had reached its 25 year dream of enrolling 50,000 students.
The chancellor first showed a clip of his father preaching in 1985 where he cast the vision for Liberty to enroll 50,000 students on campus at the turn of the century. The vision had been tweaked over the years with the advancement of online education, but the vision for 50,000 students on campus and through the Liberty Online program still remained. In fact, as of two weeks ago, the goal had even been surpassed with 45,000 students enrolled in LU Online and 12,000 residential students.
Liberty is now the 8th largest in the category of private school for profit or not and takes 1st place as the largest non-private university. The chancellor announced that the university is looking to keep the on-campus enrollment in the same vicinity as the school has found a way to function well at this capacity.
Elmer Towns, co-founder of the university, gave an inspiring speech after the announcement encouraging students to live lives of prayer, faith, and commitment. He spoke of the days when he and Dr. Falwell prayed and fasted over the university. Dr. Towns also mentioned that Dr. Falwell did not ask to be remembered for his political activism or involvement with the Moral Majority above all else. Instead he wanted to be known for his commitment to Thomas Road Baptist Church, Liberty University and his family. With such a goal being reached, it is evident that his work for Liberty is what he was remembered for today.
