5th Quarter Outreach in Amherst
November 4, 2009The gymnasium at Amherst County High School is not usually the hang-out place after football games, but this Friday, it was a little different. About 450 students gathered there for what was called the “5th quarter,” an outreach sponsored by Oasis Church. After the varsity football game, students flooded into the gymnasium and spent time eating pizza, playing basketball, and racing through an inflatable obstacle course.
D.O.A. (which stands for Dead on Awakening), a hip hop dance team from Liberty, connected with the audience through their performances. Juwante Vaughan, a member of D.O.A., said “It went pretty well. I mean, we got our point across and we got to interact with the people.”
Next, a dunk team called S.O.A.R. amazed the crowd with their skills. Later, the activities paused for a gospel message given and an invitation to accept Christ. The night was concluded with a drawing for a free Nintendo Wii.
Dozens of Liberty students volunteered their time, whether performing, praying or simply passing out fliers at the football game. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes from the high school also worked to promote the 5th quarter.
Bethany Mullinax, an organizer of the event from Oasis Church said this: “Our goal is to get into the community and serve as much as we can. We don't have any high schoolers that actually go to our church, so we were just looking for a way to serve them since we meet in the high school.”
Oasis Church, only six months old, is a church plant sponsored by Thomas Road Baptist Church. They meet from 10:30-11:45 a.m every Sunday in the Amherst County High School gym. Oasis church hopes to continue reaching out to Amherst County and serve in the name of Jesus.
